Jonathan “J.P.” Parker’s desire to serve is nothing new. As a child, his father started him out in the family travel agency, also a Greyhound bus depot. This boss’ son loaded and unloaded freight and luggage, sold bus tickets, and by age fourteen, booked international vacations and cruises for customers, fully able to hand write those pre-computer airline tickets. This start and later experience form Jonathan’s unusual insight into Miami’s lifeblood: the travel and tourism industry.
Parker attended Tulane University in New Orleans and served as president of his fraternity. Editor-in-Chief of his high school yearbook, Parker later earned stipends to defray tuition cost with that same job at University of Miami Law School while obtaining his Juris Doctorate.
As a Miami Beach Leadership Academy graduate, he served on the City’s Safety Committee, Police/Citizens Relations Committee, and Community Relations Board. Following each term, he sought to do more. Parker provided input to the City Commission as a citizen representative reviewing proposals for the City’s Emergency Management Contract.
As a board member and president of his condominium association after law school, “J.P” believes almost nothing better can prepare one for public office. A condominium association is a microcosm of a city. At the end of the day, just as with a city, the point is to preserve property values, to keep the peace, and to provide needed and wanted services to maintain a quality of life.
Parker has served as President of the Rotary Club of Miami, one of the oldest service organizations in Miami-Dade. Over the years he was Chairman of Major Gifts for the American Cancer Society and volunteered with the American Red Cross here in Miami-Dade.
Presently, he serves on the Personnel Board of the City of Miami Beach.
Jonathan “J.P.” Parker knows service is a skill honed over a lifetime of effort—not just for a campaign.
